The Wakahuia is a sacred vessel such as a canoe or anything designed to carry and protect sacred objects.
Traditional huts “Whare” and meeting houses were often decorated with intricate carvings and drawings describing the genealogy of the tribe as well as historical events and mythology.
There are many different styles of Kowhaiwhai pattern each with its own meaning and name.
