How Will I Know When I Am in Labour?
Presented by Nine Antenatal | 13 May
As part of our very first Buy Kiwi Mums & Bubs Club Webinar, we were thrilled to welcome expert midwives Kayleigh and Rebecca from Nine Antenatal, who shared over 15 years of combined experience and practical guidance for expecting parents preparing for labour and birth.
The webinar focused on helping mums-to-be feel more informed, confident and calm as they approach labour. Covering everything from recognising the early signs of labour to understanding pain relief options and knowing when it’s time to head to hospital.
What We Covered
Throughout the session, Kayleigh and Rebecca explained the differences between the latent (early) phase of labour and established labour, including what contractions may feel like, how labour progresses and why staying home during early labour can often help support a calmer and more comfortable experience.
They reminded parents that labour is unpredictable, but having the right knowledge and support can make a significant difference in coping confidently.
The webinar also covered:
- Signs that it may be time to contact your LMC or head to hospital
- The “3-1-1” guideline for contractions
- What labour assessments involve
- Pain relief options available during labour and birth
- What happens if labour doesn’t go to plan
- The importance of informed consent and feeling empowered in decision-making
Helpful Labour & Birth Tools Mentioned
During the webinar, the Nine Antenatal team shared several practical tools and comfort measures that can help during early labour and birth preparation:
- TENS Machine – commonly used during early labour to help manage contractions naturally
- Birthing Ball – encourages movement, comfort, and optimal baby positioning
-
Essential Oil Diffuser & Scents
- Clary Sage
- Frankincense
- Acupressure / Acupuncture Tools – supportive techniques for comfort and relaxation
- Heat Packs – helpful for easing back pain and tension
These tools were highlighted as simple but effective ways to support comfort, movement and calm during labour.
Key Takeaway
